Understanding "dit" Names
Found primarily in France, New France (French-Canada, Louisiana, etc.), and Scotland, dit names are essentially an alias tacked on to a family name or surname. Dit in French is a form of the word dire, which means "to say," and in the case of dit names is translated loosely as "that is to say," or "called." Therefore, the first name is the family's original surname, passed down to them by an ancestor, while the "dit" name is the name the person/family is actually called or known as. Dit names are used by families, not specific individuals, and are usually passed down to future generations, either in place of the orginal surname, or in addition to it.
Why a dit name? Dit names were often adopted by families to distinguish them from another branch of the same family. Interestingly, many dit names derived from military service, where early French military rules required a nom de guerre, or nickname, for all regular soldiers. The specific dit name may have been chosen for many of the same reasons as the original surname - as a nickname based on trade or physical characteristics, to identify the ancestral place of origin (Andre Jarret de Beauregard, where Beauregard refers to the ancestral home in the French province of Dauphine), etc.
A dit name can be legally used to replace the family's original surname, so you may find an individual listed with a dit name, or under either the original surname or the dit name. Dit names may also be found reversed with the original surname, or as hyphenated surnames.

When recording a dit name in your family tree software, it is generally standard practice to record it in its most common form - e.g. Hudon dit Beaulieu. A standardized list of dit names with their common variants can be found in Rene Jette's Répertoire des Noms de Famille du Québec" des Origines à 1825 and Msgr Cyprien Tanguay's Dictionnaire genealogique des familles canadiennes (Volume 7). Another extensive source is The dit Name: French Canadian Surnames, Aliases, Adulterations, and Anglicizations by Robert J. Quentin. When the name is not found in one of the above sources, you can use a phone book (Québec City or Montréal) to select the most common form, or just record it in the form most often used by your ancestors.

The DIONNE Quintuplets (1934)
The DIONNE Quints were born in Corbeil, ON in 1934-05-28. The first-known quintuplets to have lived beyond childhood, the DIONNE girls did not have a normal life in that they were exposed to the public during their childhood on a daily basis. Living in a private hospital built for them, they were not allowed much contact with their parents; hence, familial bonds were never experienced and each had emotional and financial difficulties throughout their life. In November 2007, two of the quints, Annette and Cécile, were still living together in Mont-St-Bruno, QC.
Oliva DIONNE & his wife,.Elzire LEGROS, had 6 children before the birth of the Quints: Ernest, Marie-Rose, Thérèse, Daniel, Léo & Pauline, who was born in 1933. After the birth of the Quint, the couple had 3 sons: Oliva, Victor & Claude.
Several books were written about the Quints, including an autobiography at the hands of ANNETTE & CÉCILE. These may easily be found in the Internet.
ANNETTE married Germain ALLARD but they eventually divorced.
CÉCILE married Philippe LANGLOIS and the couple also divorced.
ÉMÉLIE entered a convent where she had a series of seizures. One day, alone in the Infirmary in St-Agathe-des-Mnts, QC, she had a seizure, which caused her to turn over in her bed, face down on the pillow. She thus died from suffocation on 1954-08-06.
MARIE married Florian HOULE (Herman+Rose Alba ROCH) in Montréal, QC on 1958-08-11. The couple divorced. MARIE died in Montréal, QC on 1970-02-24.
YVONNE was a librarian. She died in Longueuil, QC on 2001-06-23.

Raoul (aka Ralph) M. Bessette represents the 8th Generation of the Jean (dit Brisetout) Bessette lineage. He was born August 4, 1900 in Springfield Mass. (As a matter of general interest, this is the same day as the British Queen mother was born. England recently observed her 101st birthday.) He was educated through the 6th grade when he left to join the work force which was not unusual during that era. With the US entry into World War1 he enlisted on his 18th birthday and was posted with the 13th Cavalry at Ft. Clark, Texas.
Following his honorable discharge in 1919 he returned to Mass., served in the National Guard and returned to active duty in 1925 receiving his final discharge in 1928. He met Jeanne Simone Houle around 1930 and they were married November 21, 1932 in Chicopee, Ma.
Simone was born of a large French Canadien family (11 surviving siblings) to Onesime and Eliana (Jutras) on January 7, 1907 at St. Germain, Quebec. The young couple moved into a 2nd floor apartment at 12 Lucretia Avenue, Chicopee (Willimansett), Mass. Here, the writer was born on September 6, 1933 followed 11 months later by his younger brother Richard.
My parents moved to Holyoke 3 or 4 years later and the last child, Francoise was born February 12, 1938. Their residence of 30 years was 83 Center St. in the Flats section of Holyoke. Raoul worked for a number of years as a baker (the trade he had learned in the army) and later he worked at the Worthington Pump Co. as a machinist. He was an avid bowler with the Industrial League in Holyoke and for a period of time held the three game candle pin record. He passed away in Holyoke on February 21, 1976 at age 75. Simone survived him by 21 years, succumbing at the ripe old age of almost 90 on January 9, 1997.

area areaLentini Lentini who has been training racers for 25 years and remembers Fred Wyses Air Rate as the best horse he ever trained finally decided to pass up winter campaigning and with an eye to future security se ¬ cured Nemasket Farm three years ago and now plans on living the life of a country squire during the winter months As Ralph puts it It keeps getting harder and harder to make ends meet when winter racing Its getting too tough If you can break even then youve had a successful meeting but how many do break even nowadays Now I can sit back during the off months board horses and raise a few of my own and when the tracks open here in the spring Ive got some fresh horses to work with You know they need a rest occasionally and this way they can get it without being too much of a burden on the pocketbook Besides taking care of those that I train myself I have facili ¬ ties to take care of others There is 18 large boxsized stall fully insulated and screened I have a small training track all under cover and I think its the ideal place for freshening up So despite the severity of the past winter the winning efforts of his charges indicate that not too many days were lost to the weatherman weathermanConsiders Considers Air Rate The Fastest Horse HorseNo No conversation with Ralph is complete until he extols the virtues of Air Rate who is now the leading sire at Fred Wyses farm in Texas There was a jace horse boasts Lentini he won races from coast to coast and he was one of the fastest horses I ever saw He could win from a half mile to a mile and onesix ¬ teenth and I think he could have won up to a mile and oneeighth In fact I believe he would have won the Santa Anita Derby in 1946 if he hadnt rapped himself and caught a quarter leaving the gate You know he won the prep race for the Derby the San Vicente when he galloped the mile distance in 137 Off that race he was in top shape for the Derby and despite his mishap leaving the gate he was only beaten seventh lengths by Knockdown Ralph concluded I hope I can raise one just about half as good as Air Rate was ChitChat Trainer Jess Byrd who made his New England debut at this meeting will ship the 15 racers belonging to John Kel Houssels to Washington Park to campaign at the Balmoral session opening there Accompanying the Byrd contingent will be jockey Wayne Chambers and his agent Leo Krasnow Vet ¬ eran trainer Augie Hutchins who was discharged from the South County Hospital last week end was a visitor at the course yesterday Trainer Bill Savage is han ¬ dling the racers who were under Hutchins care before his illness The national trainers guild held their first meeting of the year yesterday at Freds tavern A representative group of trainers from that associa ¬ tion was on hand It had gone unnoticed but until Circle K Farms On the Job finished second in the sixth race Saturday trainer Angel Barrera had sad ¬ dled six straight winners for his NeM Orleans owner
