DIONNE ROULEAU, 16 MONTHS; SPENT MOST OF LIFE IN CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Boston Globe, The (MA) - November 6, 1984
Deceased Name: DIONNE ROULEAU, 16 MONTHS; SPENT MOST OF LIFE IN CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
Dionne Rouleau, a severely handicapped infant who received national publicity after spending the first nine months of her life at Boston Children's Hospital, died early Sunday morning in Buffalo, N.Y., at Buffalo Children's Hospital.

Kim Rouleau, Dionne's mother, said the 16-month-old Dionne died of heart failure. She had undergone heart surgery a week ago. The infant suffered from Vater's Syndrome, a disease that caused heart, lung, stomach and arm defects.

Dionne's case drew attention after it was discovered that New Hampshire's state Medicaid program would not cover the more than $300,000 in medical bills Dionne ran up during the first nine months of her life. At the time Dionne left Boston Children's Hospital last April, New Hampshire was the only New England state that did not cover children under their Medicaid catastrophic illness plan. That policy was changed Oct. 1 to include children under 5. The Rouleaus still owe more than $100,000, Rouleau said yesterday.

Motorcycle accidents in Bartlett and Manchester killed two men late Saturday, but the city accident wasn't discovered until yesterday morning.

The Manchester crash killed John H. Smith, 32, of 490 North West Road, Canterbury, police said. The crash occurred on Upland Street east of the Goffstown town line.

The fatality occurred about 8 p.m. Saturday, but was discovered yesterday morning when the victim's friend investigated his failure to return, Manchester Police Officer Guy Tremblay said in a statement.

In the Intervale section of Bartlett, Police Officer Karl Meyers came upon the motorcycle fatality on Route 16 at 10:41 p.m. Saturday. The crash killed a local man, Richard G. Rouleau, 42, of Intervale.

Speed was not an apparent factor, but Rouleau's blood will be tested for alcohol or drug content, Meyers said.

Meyers said the bike was headed south on Route 16 when it left the road, but he has not yet determined the time of the crash. Meyers asked for anyone who saw the crash to please call the Bartlett Police Department at 603-356-5868.

Members of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department and Jackson Police Department assisted at the scene of the accident.

Rouleau's death was caused by blunt head trauma, police said. He was not wearing a helmet.

Jan Rouleau: House on a boat tribute to man's wife: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Herald, The (New Britain, CT) - June 7, 2001
Deceased Name: Jan Rouleau: House on a boat tribute to man's wife
The New Britain native has constructed a 3,100 square-foot home that he's taking on a seven-city barge tour of the East Coast to raise awareness of cancer and help raise $10 million for cancer-related organizations.

Known as Jan's House of Hope, the abode on a boat is a tribute to both Rouleau's wife, who died from lung cancer, and to the millions of people in the U.S. who have fought cancer, he said.

Rouleau got the idea for the project after working on a house that was built inside the Mall of America in Minnesota. The house was built for the Christmas shopping season, decorated by local companies, and then sold, with the proceeds going to charity.

"One day I saw a barge and thought about Huckleberry Finn and thought, 'why not,'" he said.

The tour, which kicked off last week in Portsmouth, N.H., is in Boston this weekend and will arrive in Branford next week. Other stops include New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Norfolk, Va.

At the end of the three-month tour, the house will be dismantled and auctioned or sold along with and all of the furniture and equipment inside. Rouleau said he isn't sure if the house and furnishings will be sold as a single lot or piecemeal.

"The way this house is built, a builder would be crazy not to take it as is," he said.

A 10-day celebration is planned in Branford where the 150- by 60-foot barge will be moored at the town dock. The stop is being sponsored by the Connecticut Hospice Foundation, which recently opened the Hospital of Love, a new facility on the Branford shore.

After the barge arrives on June 12, volunteers will spend several days preparing the house to welcome visitors. It's a formidable task. Everything that moves has to be packed away each time the barge is towed out to sea, and the house itself has to be tied down at eight different points to keep it from toppling over in a seaway.

But two days after its arrival, the house will be ready to receive its first VIP visitors. And on June 15, the house opens to the public for 10 days of tours. The house will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is $10 per person with all proceeds going to Connecticut Hospice.

The 3,100 square-foot house was built from a modular design that was donated to the project, Rouleau said. Sections of the house were made at a factory and then shipped in 16 tractor-trailers to Portsmouth, N.H. for final assembly on the barge. The house features three bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, a three-car garage, a vaulted great room, a second-floor media room, and a large kitchen/breakfast room.

All of the materials and the design work were donated and the house was decorated with the assistance of Home Magazine, which will feature it in an upcoming issue.

A longtime marketing and public relations executive in the housing industry, Rouleau says he didn't have to work too hard to find donations for the house. The result is that the house is filled with all of the latest high tech gadgets, including flat-panel televisions, stereos, and kitchen appliances.

The donations are the key to the project, he said, because they allow every penny that is collected from the tours and various fundraisers that will be held at the house can go directly to the charities.

"It's just an unbelievable feeling to see how good people are," Rouleau said. "Everyone's making a difference by doing a little."

Though the tour is just starting, Rouleau said his experience so far is summed up best by a conversation he heard one volunteer carpet installer have with his son. The boy, he recalled, asked his father why he was working on a Saturday and not getting paid for it.

The man, a cancer survivor himself, said 'it's payback time,'" Rouleau said.
