FARMER TAKES OWN LIFE WITH SHOTGUN
Nelson Rollo, 47 years of age, a farmer who resides in the town of Altona, near Ellenburgh Depot, shot and instantly killed himself at about 2:00 Monday afternoon on his farm on the plank road. It is said he had been in low spirits for some time and that an injury last year, caused by a fall when he struck his head, caused his despondency.
Mrs. Rollo was down stairs in the house when she heard a strange noise overhead in one of the bedrooms where her husband was and she thought he was moving some of the furniture. Soon afterwards she heard a shot. She ran to the bedroom and found her husband lying on the floor. He had shot himself with a shotgun, the charge having entered the heart. Rollo had taken the matress off the bed and had lain down on it. He had pulled the trigger of the gun with a piece of wood. Coronor LaFountaine of Champlain was called and declared the death to be one of suicide while temporiarly insane.

Walter Lavalley Obit (Henry's grandson)
From the Chateaugay-Record 1933
FATAL FIRE AT IRONA CORNER
Two Year Old Boy Smothered To Death In Fire That Destroyed Home-
Sister Was Near To Death.
Burned to death in a fire which swept his parents' home, Walter Lavalley, five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lavalley, of Irona, lost his life at 10 o'clock last Saturday morning. His two year old sister, Martha is in the Champlain Valley Hospital at Plattsburgh in a serious condition as a result of inhaling a large quantity of smoke.
The two children were in the house alone when the fire started. Their father was at work in the Irona Creamery and their mother had left the house a few minutes before to tend the gasoline station about ten rods from the house.
Suddenly the mother and neighbors saw smoke and flames arising from the house. The frantic parent hurried to the dwelling followed by neighbors and entered the building. The smoke was so dense that it was practically impossible to see anything but by grouping around the mother came upon the unconscious form of her little daughter who had climbed upon a table near the window.
Attempts to locate the boy proved fruitless and due to the intense heat and smoke, the search had to be abandoned. Within a few minutes the house, a frame dwelling, owned by Joseph Snide of Irona, was reduced to smoking embers. The arrival of the West Chazy volunteer fire department, although prompt, was too late to save the building. The loss was placed at $2500.
Walter's body was located in the basement near the kitchen stove. It was badly charred by the fire. It was believed that the youngsters had been playing with matches thus setting the building on fire and that after the flames started, Walter became frightened and hid himself in the house and burned to death.
Drs. Owen O'Neill, of Mooers Fork, and James O'Neil of Mooers, were called to the scene and rendered first aid to the small daughter. She was then taken to the Champlain Valley Hospital where she was attended by Dr. Alice M. North of Plattsburgh. It is believed the girl will recover, as the only burn she received was a superficial burn on the face. She was mostly suffering from suffocation.
Surviving Walter besides his parents and sister, are his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lavalley, of Mooers Forks, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rollo, of Ellenburg. The boys mother is the former Miss Mable Rollo, of Ellenburg Depot.

Interesting...
I've got an idea. It's tantalizing, but not a sure thing yet.
As I mentioned before, the Rouleau Association found a marriage between "Adolphe Rouleau" and "Josephine Neveu" from Ste. Martine, QC on February 11, 1861, and baptismal records of Josephine Marie Rouleau on November 29, 1861 and for Celina Rouleau on Ocober 11, 1866 (both in Ste. Martine, although I have other notes that says they were baptised in St. Chrysostome).
Your U.S. census records notes show that "Charles and Josephine Rouleau" had a daughter Josephine born in Canada in 1861 or 1862. I now think that this Josephine is the Josephine Marie, daughter of "Adolphe and Josephine." Now, there is no Celina Rouleau on the 1870 or 1880 U.S. census. Why? A lot of children died early in life, even into the 20th century. Maybe that's why we don't see Celina. But what about Henry? He was born in Canada, according to the 1870 U.S. census. One possibility is that the record is in another parish, but that seems unlikely since Henry was born between Josephine and Celina, and they seem to have been baptised in the same parish. Perhaps the record is in Ste. Martine/St. Chrysostome, but maybe the priest wrote the record with Charles listed as the father (people often got written up in records under their second names), and the researcher did not figure that Adolphe and Charles were the same person. Or maybe the family was already in their wandering period which later led them to upstate New York where Mary was born.
What would we need to show definitively that Charles and Adolphe are actually the same person? Maybe we won't be able to know with 100% certainty. If you could find a baptismal record for Adolphe and found he was really "Adolphe Charles" that would be the best case. If you could find Henry (Henri)'s baptismal record maybe that would help.
What do you think?

An Email from Marc Rouleau re: Mary
I have a copy of a file created by L'Association des Rouleau d'Amerique which lists the Rouleau marriages they found, mostly from Quebec province. Outside of Quebec they were not very thorough.
>
> The file shows a Mélande Rouleau who married an Isaïe Séguin on October 13, 1884 in St. Isidore, Ontario. Mélande's parents were Jean-Baptiste Rouleau and Marie Leclerc. Jean-Baptiste and Marie Leclerc married on February 4, 1856 in St. Chrysostome. Mélande was first cousin to my great-great grandfather, Denis Rouleau, who was baptized in St. Chrysostome.
>
>
>
> Denis's parents were Denis Rouleau and Marie Neveu. They married in 1858 in Ste. Martine, QC. Mélande's father, Jean-Baptiste, and Denis's father, Denis, were brothers. They had another brother, Adolphe, who married a Josephine Neveu, in 1861 in Ste. Martine.
>
>
>
> The file shows two children for Adolphe Rouleau and Josephine Neveu, a Josephine Marie Rouleau born November 29, 1861 in Ste. Martine, and a Célina Rouleau, born October 11, 1866 in Ste. Martine (I have some other notes that says they were baptized in St. Chrysostome). The file does not show any other children, nor does it show who Josephine Marie nor Célina married.

> What I would wonder next is "how good is your information?" If it is from word-of-mouth, then that would be less reliable than a primary source, like a birth certificate. Your "Mary" could really have been a "Marie," and "Marie" could have even been a second name. Could Josephine Marie be your Mary? Melende and Josephine Marie were first cousins.
>
>
>
> What source gave Mary's parents' names as Charles and Delphina? (Could Adolph have been Adolphe Charles? Delphina and Josephine are close to the same name.)
>
>
>
> What you might want to do is check the Blue Drouin (or another reference) books for the marriage between "Mary (or Marie) Rouleau" and "Isaac (or Isaïe) Séguin." You'll probably need to contact a library and even pay a small fee for them to look this up. There are only a few places in the U.S. that have the Blue Drouin set. One place is the American-Canadian Genealogy Society out of Manchester, NH (http://www.acgs.org/ ).

French Canadian Christmas and New Years
Noël (Q) K-3
Noël (le 25 decembre)
Christmas is a Christian holiday familiar to most Canadian children. Though important in Francophone culture as well, the manner in which it is celebrated, the customs, and the traditions are sometimes very different. A very effective way to demonstrate cultural similarities and differences is to compare and contrast Christmas celebrations in France, Québec and British Columbia.
Christmas in France
Christmas in France is a family holiday, a religious festival, and a celebration for children. New Year's Day, however, is the time for the adult festival when gifts are exchanged and greeting calls made. Though traditions vary from one area of France to another, midnight mass, a very important aspect of the season, marks the beginning of the festivities. Young children do not accompany their parents to mass, but place their shoes by the fireside before going to bed. In the morning the shoes will be filled with sweets, fruits, and sometimes a toy from Père Noël (Father Christmas). After midnight mass, the rest of the family members return home to a grand celebration known as le réveillon. Foods vary according to the region if France. In Alsace, goose is traditionally served; in Brittany, buckwheat pancakes with sour cream; in Burgundy, turkey and chestnuts; in Paris, fried white sausages, cakes, candies and pancakes (in Paris, Christmas is less a religious and family festival and has become a time for dancing, fine dining and wines).
Old French legends say that on Christmas Eve animals throughout the countryside are given the power to speak and predict the future, but that they will not use this power if they know a human is listening. Ancient tradition, for its part, requires the burning of a bûche de Noël (Yule Log) on Christmas Eve. This tradition originates from the old belief that at the end of each year, as the days become shorter, the sun stays still for 12 days in a row. The Yule Log is supposed to be large enough to burn throughout this period to keep away bad luck. In areas where the tradition of the Yule Log has fallen into disuse, a cake shaped like a log is made to symbolize the Yule Log.
Christmas in Québec
In Québec, Christmas was traditionally a religious and social occasion, a time for large family gatherings and celebrations. Preparations began weeks in advance as food and presents were prepared. La guignolée was a very old custom practised in Québec organized by the parish priest. Several weeks before Christmas a group of men went to homes of the needy, announcing themselves with a large bell and distributing money, clothes and food collected from throughout the parish.
But the actual Christmas festivities began on Christmas Eve. People would go to great lengths to arrive at church for la messe de minuit (midnight mass), braving the cold and snow which made winter travel so difficult. After mass, great family gatherings would take place at one of the homes. In large French-Canadian families, as many as 60 or 70 people might sit down to the feast of le réveillon. Traditional foods served might include la tourtière (meat pie of pork and beef), le cipâte (a meat and vegetable casserole), roast goose, and desserts such as la bûche de Noël (yule log) or la tarte au sucre (sugar pie). The réveillons usually went on all night, so Christmas Day was spent sleeping. Christmas marked the beginning of le Temps de Fêtes, a holiday period of visiting and celebrating that ended on January 6 with la Fête des Rois (Epiphany).
Traditionally gifts were exchanged at New Year's; now gifts are often distributed after the Christmas meas by a family member dressed up as le Père Noël (Santa Claus). Though life in Québec has changed greatly since the days of the pioneers, many of the old customs are revived during the Christmas season.

Tourtière (Meat Pie)
Tourtières were originally called tourtes de porc frais. These fresh pork pies were baked in pie pans called tourtières. Over the years, French Canadians came to apply the word tourtièe to the pie itself. It has long been a traditional dish at the réveillon that follows midnight mass on Christmas night.
1 9" double crust pie pastry
1 medium potato, cooked and mashed
1 lb. ground pork or pork and beef mixed (500 ml)
1/2 cup potato water (125 ml)
