From Genforum:
Joseph Houle (b. abt. 1834) was brother to my gg-gf Jean-Baptiste Houle (b. abt 1825). They were sons of Jean-Baptiste Houle (b. abt 1800). Their mother was Angelique/Judith Chenade/L'herot.
For a marriage date for Joseph & Sophie see the book "Marriages at St. Chrysostome."
Joseph Houle, fils (son) de J.B. et Judith
Shnad md. Sophie Desgroselliers on Aug. 2,
1864.
The mother's name is very difficult to pin down.
Here is what is found in the 1850 Clinton Co. NY census record. "Wool" is just one of several phonetic misspellings of HOULE that are found in Clinton Co. New York census returns.
John Wool age 50, no profession, b. in
Canada, cannot read & write
Julia 45, b. in Canada, cannot read & write
Angelique 23, b. in Canada, cannot r&w
Henry 21, laborer, b. in Canada, cannot r&w
Flavia 20, female, b. in Canada, cannot r&w (French variant of Phoebe)
Tuffield 18, male, b. in Canada (presumably a corruption of Theophile)
Joseph 16, b. in Canada
Aurilla 14, female, b. in Canada
Amab 12, male, b. in Canada
Napoleon 9, b. in Canada
It is not yet clear to me if this Julia is another corruption of Angelique/Judith and she is the mother of all J.B.'s children or if Julia is a second wife to J.B. The reference is Mooers, Clinton Co. NY, family no. 2348, p. 407A.
I think Sophia Prosper/Desgroselliers was the daughter of Gabriel Desgroselliers & Sophie Rivard.
The 1870 census record for Joseph & Sophie is:
Heoul, Joseph age 36, farmer, $200 in real estate,$100 personal estate, born in Canada, father was foreign born, cannot read & write
Sopie 29, keeps house, b. in Canada, parents
foreign born, cannot r&w
Joseph 5, b. in NY, parents foreign born
Are 4, b. in NY, parents foreign born
Dolphise 3, b. in NY, parents foreign born
John 1, b. in NY, parents foreign born
The reference is Mooers, Clinton Co. NY, p. 89, written p. 392, family no. 663.]

Hello "Houle" researchers,
In trying to root out information on my family, I often try the families of the siblings to my ancester. This may be of interest to some of you:
From the Parish index of St. Phillipe, La Prairie, Quebec (avail. through LDS microfilm)
Jean Baptiste Houle
married:
Judith Schneider
on November 25,1822 in St. Phillipe parish, of La Prairie, Quebec.
I believe that the Schneiders had connections in upstate New York. They may have lived there or had relatives there. I have parents, grandparents, and siblings for Judith. It sounds like a very likely match to Schnad/Chenad in your research. Please let me know if it is. Thanks!
