Dionne Rouleau, a severely handicapped infant who received national publicity after spending the first nine months of her life at Boston Children's Hospital, died early Sunday morning in Buffalo, N.Y., at Buffalo Children's Hospital.

Kim Rouleau, Dionne's mother, said the 16-month-old Dionne died of heart failure. She had undergone heart surgery a week ago. The infant suffered from Vater's Syndrome, a disease that caused heart, lung, stomach and arm defects.


Dionne's case drew attention after it was discovered that New Hampshire's state Medicaid program would not cover the more than $300,000 in medical bills Dionne ran up during the first nine months of her life. At the time Dionne left Boston Children's Hospital last April, New Hampshire was the only New England state that did not cover children under their Medicaid catastrophic illness plan. That policy was changed Oct. 1 to include children under 5. The Rouleaus still owe more than $100,000, Rouleau said yesterday.
