Fr. Gerard Rouleau JOUBERT: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Houston Chronicle (TX) - January 20, 2004
Deceased Name: Fr. Gerard Rouleau JOUBERT
Gerard Rouleau Joubert: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Houston Chronicle (TX) - January 20, 2004
Deceased Name: Gerard Rouleau Joubert
The Rev. Gerard Rouleau Joubert, an impassioned Catholic priest who saved Midtown's Holy Rosary parish from closure in the 1970s, died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 92.
Joubert loved telling his parishioners of the infinite beauty of God, and his sermons and dedication to the church transformed a shrinking congregation into a dynamic group of worshippers, his friends and colleagues said.
"He was a remarkable person. The fact that Holy Rosary was still here when Midtown fell apart is due to his influence," said the Rev. Joseph D. Konkel, the church's current pastor.
Houstonians were moving to the suburbs in 1970, when Joubert started at Holy Rosary, and the church's aging membership was dwindling, said Alicia Chavez, a longtime friend and worker in Joubert's ministry.
The parish faced closure, but Joubert revitalized the membership. His reputation from a stint as chaplain at Rice University from 1958 to 1964 attracted young couples, and the inclusion of Vietnamese immigrants added another new group, Chavez said. Holy Rosary was among the first parishes in Houston to welcome the Vietnamese, she said.
"He wasn't looking for numbers; he wasn't looking for quotas. He would just preach," Chavez said. "He would captivate an audience. If a baby cried, nobody heard it."
Joubert was born in Momence, Ill., in 1911. He entered the Dominican Order as a member of the St. Joseph Province and was ordained in 1938. After earning a master's degree and doctorate in philosophy from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., he taught at several universities.
Joubert remained at Holy Rosary until his retirement in 1986. He later wrote a book about his experiences as a priest and penned a volume of religious meditations.
Although known for his speaking skills, Joubert also inspired others through his actions.
"He would take care of you in a way that made you feel he had lifted a burden from you," Chavez said.
Joubert is survived by a sister, Gerarda Marie Joubert, a nun in Los Gatos, Calif.
Visitation will be today at Holy Rosary Church, 3601 Milam, after 5:15 p.m. Mass. Rosary will be at 7 tonight, and the funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
