John Charles Rouleau: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Rutland Herald (VT) - September 5, 2006
Deceased Name: John Charles Rouleau
PITTSFORD - John Charles Rouleau of Pittsford died at his home on Saturday morning, Sept. 2, 2006, after a period of failing health. He was 87.

John was born in Lancaster, Mass., the son of Robert and Marie (Poulin) Rouleau. He was educated in Lancaster schools and later married his high school sweetheart, Miriam Collins. They had three children, Bonnie Jean, John Stephen and Sharon Marie.

After a stint in the U.S. Army during World War II, he attended the Stockbridge School, a subsidiary of the University of Massachusetts, graduating second in his class. He subsequently ran his own landscaping business in the Holyoke and South Hadley, Mass., area.

After Miriam's death in 1957, John moved to Vermont, where he met and married Ila (Olds) Richards. Ila brought five children to the marriage: Linda, Brenda, Joe, Eugene and Michael. The Rouleau home on Corn Hill Road in Pittsford was the scene of many a celebration with both family and friends, and became known simply as "Corn Hill." It was a place filled with music, laughter and good conversation.

While living at Corn Hill, John had a long and satisfying career with the Federal Forest Service. Among his many accomplishments was designing and overseeing the building of the bridge and picnic area at Texas Falls near Middlebury. He later worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the plant and pest division.

John led an uncommonly productive and eventful life, as his interests were many and diverse. Athletic as well as artistic, John played third base on the Clinton (Mass.) baseball team as a young man, and was a competitive ski jumper.

He learned to play the violin as a boy, and when he was a teenager was a founding member of the "Yonder Hill Boys," a musical group in Lancaster. In recent years, he played with "Maynard's Old Time Fiddlers," a group based in the Rutland area.

He was also an artist and craftsman, filling the homes of family and friends with his paintings, wooden toys and small pieces of furniture. He and Ila even turned their hands at making quilts.

John's love of poetry knew no bounds, and his children remember his reading to them, "Evangeline," "The One-Hoss Shay" and "The Children's Hour." Among his favorite poets were Longfellow, Yeats and fellow Vermonters Robert Frost and Ruth Stone. He also wrote his own poetry, often using the Haiku form to express his feelings.

John was always an outdoors person, and had an easy and affectionate relationship with the natural world. His love of plants, birds, land forms - even the weather - was palpable, and his knowledge of them formidable. He also exhibited an unusual love of place: the town of Lancaster where he grew up; the state of Vermont where he was a member of the 251 Club; and the country of Ireland where he had many friends.

John was a proud and unapologetic liberal, whose terse Letters to the Editor assailing the mendacity in conservative politics appeared regularly in the Rutland Herald.

He was also a champion of the disenfranchised. He retired from the U.S. Forest Service to work with young people at the Ripton Job Corps Center. After his nominal retirement from the Department of Agriculture, John worked for the local Adult Literacy Program, going into people's homes to teach them to read. He was a born teacher, giving violin lessons in his later years, and he was pleased that each of his children became teachers themselves. Until recently, he and Ila never missed a Rock Point School graduation.

John's sensitivity to others, his quick wit, his considerable intelligence and his innate sense of unconditional positive regard for others earned him the love and admiration of his family and hundreds of friends. Eugene, his stepson, says he "cared for people and treated them as individuals. He provided unconditional support" to everyone he came in contact with. His granddaughter, Rebecca, adds, "He looked for the good in people and, more often than not, found it."

John was predeceased by his first wife, Miriam; his second wife, Ila; his brother, Robert; his sister-in-law, Gertrude (Loverin) Rouleau; and his brothers-in-law, Roger, Wayne and Lawrence Collins.

Survivors include his daughter, Bonnie Jean Cousineau and her husband David of Cape Neddick, Maine; his son, John Rouleau and his wife Alice of Burlington; and his daughter, Sharon Babb and her husband Joe of Knoxville, Tenn. He also leaves his stepchildren, Linda Bailey and Brenda Cadieux, Eugene Richards and his wife Julie, all of Burlington, Joseph Richards Rydell and his partner David Wood of New York City, and Michael Richards and his wife Jeannie of Wisconsin.

His several grandchildren are: Terrill Ploss and her husband Kevin of Richmond, Mass.; Stephen Cousineau and his partner Cheryl LaFlamme of York, Maine; Geoffrey Cousineau and his wife Shannon of Ogunquit, Maine; Rebecca Rouleau and her partner Brian of Burlington; Jeremy Babb of Knoxville, Tenn.; Scott Cadieux; Brad Cadieux and his wife Tania; Nicole Cadieux; Melissa Bailey Hellyer and her husband Derek; Melinda Bailey and Sean Bailey of Colchester; Eugene Richards IV; Stephen Richards; Hunter Rydell-Wood; and Alida Richards.

John also leaves many great-grandchildren: Jared Ploss and his partner Sharon LeMay of Wilmington, Mass.; Ashlin Ploss and his fiancée Ashley Rodman of Pittsfield, Mass.; Gabrielle Ploss of Richmond, Mass.; Danielle Cousineau and her partner Scott of Adams, Mass.; Amanda Cousineau and her partner David of North Adams, Mass.; Andrew and Elisabeth Cousineau of Merrimack, N.H.; Emma Lee Babb of Knoxville, Tenn.; Chelsea Cadieux; and Zack and Emma Hellyer.

Additional survivors are his nieces, Kathy Rouleau of Essex Junction, Virginia Eklund and her husband Neil of Danville, Ky., and their two sons, Andy and Scott; and his brothers-in-law, Vernon Collins and Ralph Collins from Massachusetts. He also leaves his dear friends, Maura and Ben Jordan of Ireland and Elizabeth Brown of Pittsford.

The family would like to publicly thank the staff at the Rutland Regional Medical Center and all the nurses with M and M Private Care Inc. who took such good care of John over the last several months.

A gathering to celebrate John's life will be held at the Pittsford Congregational Church on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's name may be sent to: The Vermont Nature Conservancy, 27 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05062; the Peace and Justice Center, 21 Church Street, Burlington, VT 05401; The Pittsford Humane Society, Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763; or any of several Audubon Societies nationwide.

Wilmette Life (IL) - April 27, 2006
Deceased Name: Mary Rouleau
Mary Rouleau, the president of the board of directors of Light Opera Works and a longtime resident of Evanston, died April 16 in Evanston. She was 59.

Born June 28, 1946, in Blue Island, Ill., she made her second home in Sundance, Utah.

Ms. Rouleau's creative efforts spanned photography to bookbinding to collecting vintage decorative arts, and she used her talents to help many organizations in the Evanston and Chicago areas.

Bridget McDonough, general manager of the Evanston-based Light Opera Works, said Ms. Rouleau joined the board of the Evanston-based Light Opera Works in 1999 and was elected president in January 2005.

"She served on the benefit committee for three years and was the driving force behind its success," McDonough said. "Having once owned her own photography business, she also donated her services as photographer for many Light Opera Works' productions and for five years at the Children's Summer Workshop.

"Since the beginning of her involvement with our musical-theater company, she showed endless dedication, and when asked about her participation on the board, she often simply replied, 'I just love live theater.' She also served on several steering committees organized in Evanston to develop a performing-arts center for the city."

In addition, Mrs. Rouleau served as president of the women's board of the Travelers and Immigrants Aid Society, was president-elect of the Rotary Club of Evanston and president of the Dancing Club of Evanston.

She also was a member of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce, and she supported many civic and religious organizations with her philanthropy.

She enjoyed traveling with friends and family, especially to Paris.

According to relatives, wherever Mrs. Rouleau was, she brought a great sense of humor and a gift for making others laugh.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Everette (nee Desmaraisate) Roulo; a sister, Loretta Sharkey; and a brother, Thomas Roulo.

Survivors include her husband, Sigmund Eisenschenk; sisters Joan Stubenrauch, Elizabeth (Paul) Daugirda and Patricia (Robert) Szekely; brothers Robert (Shirley) Roulo, Jerome (Diane) Roulo, John (Peggy) Roulo, David (Edith) Roulo; and more than 40 nieces and nephews spanning three generations.

Mary Rouleau: Photographer supported charity groups: Loved theater, travel, animals, decorative arts: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Chicago Sun-Times (IL) - April 19, 2006
Deceased Name: Mary Rouleau: Photographer supported charity groups: Loved theater, travel, animals, decorative arts
MARY ROULEAU 1946-2006

Mary Rouleau, whose creative interests spanned photography to bookbinding, was a philanthropist who supported many civic, arts and charity organizations in the Evanston and Chicago area through her talents and generosity.

Ms. Rouleau's charitable endeavors included serving as president of the Women's Board of Travelers and Immigrants Aid, president-elect of the Rotary Club of Evanston and president of the board of Light Opera Works.

Ms. Rouleau, of Evanston, died Sunday at Evanston Hospital of uterine cancer. She was 59.

Born June 28, 1946, in Blue Island, Ms. Rouleau was the youngest of 10 children. She was raised in the South Side Mount Greenwood neighborhood, where she graduated from Mother of Sorrows High School. She spent childhood summers in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. As an adult, she adopted Sundance, Utah, as her second home.

She attended Northern Illinois University her freshman year and completed her bachelor's degree in elementary education at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the early 1970s. It was while attending UIC that she met her husband, Sigmund Eisenschenk, whom she married in 1971.

"I was teaching, and she was working in the Financial Aid Department. My roommate knew Mary's niece, who was her roommate, and they had just moved into their first apartment and were having a housewarming party," her husband said. "Since my roommate didn't have a car, I had to go along. It wasn't love at first sight, but it definitely was respect. Over the course of time, one thing led to another, and before you knew it, we were married."

Ms. Rouleau was a woman of diverse talents. She held many different jobs before focusing on photography, her passion, said her husband. She worked a short time for the Rock Island Railroad, finding lost railroad cars. She then worked for several years at Marshall Field's, starting as an employee trainer and moving up through the ranks to floor manager. She left for I. Magnin's, where she also was a floor manager.

"All the while, though, she had an avid interest from the beginning in photography," her husband said. "She'd been an amateur photographer since we first started dating, and I was with her when she bought her first camera -- a Pentax Spotmatic -- that she just loved. After the I. Magnin's experience, she went into photography full time."

Ms. Rouleau worked as a freelance photographer, compiling an impressive portfolio, her husband said. She also collected vintage decorative arts. She loved the arts, especially theater, and was president of the Dancing Club of Evanston, a social club. She was an active booster of the Evanston community as a member of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce. She was also a lover of animals, taking in stray pets and helping find them homes.

In the last few years, Ms. Rouleau, a lover of books, had embarked on a new career -- bookbinding and preservation -- traveling the country to learn from the very few noted experts of the rare art. Traveling, too, was a passion.

"Wherever she was, Mary brought a great sense of humor and a gift for making others laugh," said her husband. "We discovered Paris together, and with her French roots, she took to it quite naturally. It was one of her favorite cities. We discovered Utah and Sundance together. She just loved the mountains there. One of her sole regrets at the end was that she hadn't had a chance to visit the mountains."

Besides her husband, survivors include three sisters, Joan Stubenrauch, Elizabeth Daugirda and Patricia Szekely; and four brothers, Robert, Jerome, John and David.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary Church, 1012 Lake St., Evanston. Interment will be private. Photo: MARY ROULEAU: Dancing Club of Evanston leaderAuthor: Maudlyne Ihejirika
